Samples of cuttings from the Borchard A-2 well, Imperial Valley, California, were collected over a measured borehole temperature interval 135° to 275°C. The <0.5-µm (e.s.d.) fraction was separated using high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) to create a nonmagnetic fraction rich in illite and a magnetic fraction rich in chlorite. Chlorite was less easily separated from illite in lower temperature samples (<200°C), presumably due to the presence of polymineralic grains of chlorite and illite. Grains in higher temperature samples were more nearly monomineralic and more easily separated.
The chlorite is the IIb polytype. The thickness of coherent scattering domains of chlorite increased until 220°C and then remained constant. The amount of 7-Å interstratified material increased downhole until 195°C and then decreased. Over the same temperature interval, the illite polytypes varied systematically from 1Md (135° to 175°C) to 1M + 2M1 (230° to 275°C) and coherent scattering domains in the mineral became thicker to about 200°C and then remained constant in thickness. The percentage of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) increased from 40% at 135°C to 100% at temperature >205°C; ordering in the I/S changes from R0 to R1 between 135° and 155°C, and from R1 to R ≥ 3 at temperatures >155°C.
The concurrent structural changes in chlorite and illite indicate a general improvement in the overall structural order of the clay minerals with increasing temperature. Differences between chlorite and illite suggest that the minerals may have reacted differently to changing conditions or that they may have formed by different mechanisms. The exclusive occurrence of IIb chlorite at temperatures as low as 135°C extends the limit of IIb chlorite stability to temperatures lower than previous estimates.

The oxidation of As(III) to As(V) by K-birnessite was examined at different temperatures, pHs, and birnessite/As(III) ratios. Experiments ranged in duration from 5 to 64 hr, and solution and solid products were determined at several intervals. All experiments showed that the reaction produced large amounts of K+ to solution and very little Mn2+. As(V) was released to solution and incorporated into the K-birnessite. The oxidation was initially rapid and then slowed. The oxidation of As(III) was probably facilitated initially by autocatalytic Mn-As(V) reactions occurring mostly in the interlayer, in which large amounts of As(V) and K+ could be easily released to solution. The reaction also slowed when interlayer Mn was exhausted by forming Mn-As(V) complexes. Mn(IV) could only be acquired from the octahedral sheets of the birnessite. The two-stage reaction process proposed here depended on the layered structure of birnessite, the specific surface, and presence of exchangeable cations in K-birnessite.

The heavy atom content and distribution in chlorite were estimated using the relative intensities of basal X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) peaks. For these peaks to be meaningful, however, corrections had to be made for the effects of sample thickness, sample length, and preferred orientation of the mineral grains, all of which are 2θ dependent. The effects of sample thickness were corrected for by a simple formula. The effects of sample length were accounted for by using rectangular samples and by ensuring that the sample intersected the X-ray beam through the range of diffraction angles of interest. Preferred orientation of mineral grains were either measured directly or estimated. Estimated values were quicker and easier to obtain and were within 5% of measured values. A comparison of the compositional parameters of chlorite estimated before correcting for these sample effects with those estimated after the corrections had been applied indicate that the uncorrected values differed from the corrected values by as much as 55% of the latter values. Mounts of a single sample prepared by different filter-membrane peel and porous-plate techniques yielded widely different compositions until the measurements were corrected for sample effects. Analyses in triplicate indicated that the XRD intensity ratio 003/001 is preferred for calculating heavy atom distributions and abundances in chlorite because of the relative strength of the 001 peak.

Since the initial studies of chlorite polytypes, it has been suggested that the stability of the various polytypes may be a function of the temperature at which the mineral formed; however, few studies have been performed in which polytypes of chlorite in a specific suite of samples have been determined and correlated with temperature. A review of the reported occurrences of type I chlorite indicates that other factors, including grain size of the host rock, may be at least as important as temperature in controlling the stability of these polytypes. Results of systematic studies in areas of diagenesis and very low-grade metamorphism suggest that type-II chlorite is stable at temperatures well below 200°C and that it can form as the initial chlorite phase without passing through any intermediate polytypic stages. The conditions under which type-I polytypes occur are somewhat restricted, and cognizance of those restrictions will help to direct future studies of chlorite polytype transformations. These studies should focus on the structural details of polytype transformations; on the relationship of polytype stability to pressure, composition and kinetics; and on experimental calibration of the transformations.

The structure of a highly disordered synthetic birnessite was studied by comparing powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data with calculated patterns generated by BIRNDIF and WILDFIRE© in an attempt to describe the nature of disorder and to estimate the size of the coherent diffracting domains. The material has a turbostratic stacking sequence and coherent diffracting domains that are 25 to 30 Å on a side in the ab plane (N1 = 5 unit cells, N2 = 10 unit cells) and which average 2.5 unit cells thick parallel to c. Turbostratic stacking probably results because there are few constraints on the relationship between adjacent layers.

The structure of a disordered IIb Mg-chamosite was studied using Rietveld refinement techniques and powder X-ray diffraction (CuKα, 18–120° 2θ in 0.02° 2θ increments). The refinement in space group CĪ yielded high precision lattice parameters (a = 5.36982(5)Å, b = 9.3031(9)Å, c = 14.2610(6)Å, α = 90.315(5)°, β = 97.234(7)°, γ = 90.022(9)°) and atomic coordinates very similar to previous studies. However, the presence of semi-random stacking in this specimen created a situation in which not all atoms could be precisely located: the positions of the octahedral cations and anions which repeat at intervals of ±b/3 could be uniquely determined in three dimensions whereas only the z parameter of the other atoms could be refined. The reasonable appearance of the final model, despite the fact that many of the atom positions could be located in only one dimension, may have resulted because all of the atoms in this structure except O(5) repeat at intervals which are very nearly ±b/3.

In this article, we use the precision of Bayesian modeled radiocarbon dates to reconstruct a generational history of Late Preclassic (300 BC–AD 250) Cerros (Cerro Maya), Belize. This research was made possible by long-curated excavation records and material remains now housed at the Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville. Our interpretations build on earlier research and refine the temporal resolution significantly, enabling us to view site development from the perspective of adjacent generations sharing a lived experience. Here we examine material evidence of their collective actions as they built new buildings and renovated aging ones, characterizing their roles in inventing a visual future for the Late Preclassic Maya port that engaged ancestral actions while reinventing the landscape.

Research was conducted in 2012 and 2013 to evaluate the response of the rice cultivars ‘Cheniere', ‘CL151′, ‘Caffey', ‘CL261′, and ‘CLXL745′ response to POST applications of saflufenacil. Treatments included a nontreated control, saflufenacil at 50 g ai ha−1, and carfentrazone at 35 g ai ha−1 applied mid-POST (MPOST) to rice in the three- to four-leaf stage. Pooled across cultivars, injury was greatest at 3 and 7 d after treatment (DAT), 21 and 17%, respectively. Rice injury was only 5% at 14 DAT and 1% at 28 DAT. Hybrid long-grain cultivar CLXL745 was injured more than inbred long-grain cultivars CL151 and Cheniere. Cheniere was more tolerant than inbred medium-grain cultivars CL261 and Caffey. All cultivars exhibited tolerance to saflufenacil as evidenced by similar normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI), maturity, mature plant height, and rice yield (rough, whole, and total milled rice).

Palmer amaranth is the most common and troublesome broadleaf weed species of rice in Mississippi because of the effects of early-season interference and infestations on rice levees, and herbicides for residual or POST control of Palmer amaranth in rice are limited. Three studies were conducted in 2012 and 2013 to evaluate application rates and timings of saflufenacil in rice and to determine the influence of adjuvants when mixed with saflufenacil applied POST. In a PRE study, no injury occurred after saflufenacil PRE, and no control was observed from carfentrazone. Hemp sesbania and Palmer amaranth control increased with increasing saflufenacil rate when applied PRE. Hemp sesbania control with saflufenacil at any rate PRE was ≤ 25% at 35 d after treatment (DAT). Palmer amaranth and ivyleaf morningglory control with saflufenacil at 75 g ai ha−1 PRE was ≥ 94% 35 DAT. In a POST study, rice injury was influenced by application timing and rate of saflufenacil; however, efficacy was not. Rice injury with saflufenacil at 25 g ha−1 and carfentrazone early POST (EPOST) and late POST was similar 7 DAT. Saflufenacil at 50 and 75 g ha−1 EPOST were the most injurious 7 DAT. Control of hemp sesbania and ivyleaf morningglory was similar for all rates of saflufenacil and carfentrazone; however, Palmer amaranth control with saflufenacil at any rate was greater than that of carfentrazone 14 and 28 DAT. In an adjuvant study, rice injury was influenced by adjuvant and saflufenacil rate. Saflufenacil applied alone or in mixture with crop oil concentrate (COC) was least injurious, and saflufenacil at 50 g ha−1 was more injurious than saflufenacil at 25 g ha−1. Saflufenacil applied in combination with any adjuvant provided better control of hemp sesbania and Palmer amaranth than saflufenacil alone. On the basis of this research, saflufenacil should be applied PRE at 50 or 75 g ha−1, depending on weed spectrum, and POST applications should be made at 25 g ha−1 in combination with COC after the two-leaf rice growth stage.

Research was conducted in Mississippi in 2012 and 2013 to compare the efficacy of saflufenacil to other broadleaf herbicides applied in mixtures with imazethapyr in a Clearfield rice system. Saflufenacil at 50 g ai ha−1, carfentrazone at 35 g ai ha−1, a prepackaged mixture of halosulfuron plus thifensulfuron at 35 plus 4 g ai ha−1, and a prepackaged mixture of propanil plus thiobencarb at 2,240 plus 2,240 g ai ha−1 were applied in mixture with imazethapyr at 70 g ai ha−1 early-POST (EPOST) to rice in the one- to two-leaf stage or late-POST (LPOST) to rice in the four-leaf to one-tiller stage. No differences in injury among the broadleaf herbicides or between application timings were detected at any evaluation. Imazethapyr combined with propanil plus thiobencarb or saflufenacil provided the greatest control of barnyardgrass 7 and 14 d after treatment (DAT). Hemp sesbania, ivyleaf morningglory, and Palmer amaranth control was greatest and similar for imazethapyr combined with carfentrazone, propanil plus thiobencarb, and saflufenacil; however, rough rice yield was greatest for imazethapyr combined with propanil plus thiobencarb or saflufenacil. Propanil plus thiobencarb or saflufenacil can be used in a Clearfield rice system to achieve optimum weed control and highest rice yields.

Systems linking people and nature, known as social-ecological systems, are increasingly understood as complex adaptive systems. Essential features of these complex adaptive systems – such as nonlinear feedbacks, strategic interactions, individual and spatial heterogeneity, and varying time scales – pose substantial challenges for modeling. However, ignoring these characteristics can distort our picture of how these systems work, causing policies to be less effective or even counterproductive. In this paper we present recent developments in modeling social-ecological systems, illustrate some of these challenges with examples related to coral reefs and grasslands, and identify the implications for economic and policy analysis.

Purpose:
Prehospital emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, as initial responders to calls for assistance, are in an ideal position to identify abused or neglected elderly. A survey of prehospital personnel in Michigan was conducted to determine the scope of this problem, levels of awareness, and willingness to report cases of elder abuse.
Methods:The study population was a random sample of 500 prehospital personnel throughout one state. A blinded, self-administered survey was completed by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics outlining their practice characteristics, prevalence of abuse in their community, and training available specific to elder abuse. Attitudes concerning the understanding and reporting of geriatric abuse were measured using a Likert-type scale.
Results:A total of 156 surveys (31%) was completed; 68% of the respondents were paramedics. Respondents had an average of 8.7 years (range: 9 months-30 years) of prehospital emergency-care experience, and evaluated an average of 11 patients (range: 1–59) older than 65 years of age each week. Seventy-eight percent had seen a suspected case of elder abuse or negligence during their careers; 68% had seen a case during the past 12 months (mean: 2.3 cases/yr; range: 0–24 cases/yr). However, surveyed personnel reported only 27% of suspected cases to authorities last year (mean: 0.62 cases/yr). Reasons for not reporting included 1) unsure which authorities take reports; 2) unclear definitions; 3) unaware of mandatory reporting laws; and 4) lack of anonymity. Ninety-five percent of respondents stated that training related to elder abuse was not available through their EMS agency.
Conclusion:Paramedics and EMTs lack complete understanding of their role in the identification and reporting of elder abuse. This information should be emphasized during EMS training and reinforced through continuing education.
